Dangerous parking that goes unpunished

It seems that to park on a certain bus stop in Naxxar Road, San Ġwann is permissible or condoned by the authorities.

I drive by this particular bus stop every day. Every morning, without fail, there is a car or two parked bang in the middle of this bus stop, as the picture shows. It is quite obvious that the reason why this blatant flaunting of the law occurs on a daily basis is due to the fact that no one has been issued with a contravention notice, whether by the police or by the wardens.

On October 21, I rang the warden's head office in Msida to report this dangerous practice. I was informed that the problem is the council's responsibility. "I thought you rang here to report an accident," I was told. When I pointed out that I had rung in order to prevent an accident and suggested that maybe wardens should be more vigilant in this particular spot, I was told there is only one warden for that area and perhaps he does not see the cars parked there when he walks by. It is interesting to note that this stretch of road is very busy at most times of the day.

So, I rang the council and spoke to a nice lady in customer care. She was very courteous and helpful, telling me that the responsibility falls upon the shoulders of the police. I rang the police station twice... and no one answered the telephone.

I hope that the authority or public body whose responsibility it is to control and issue contraventions, reads this letter and does its duty.

When I used to work in San Ġwann I used to park my car just outside the office in Mensija Road. On three occasions (in two months) I exceeded the 40-minute time limit... and on all three occasions I found contravention notices stuck to the car windscreen! I also should mention that these notices were put there by a warden!

So, isn't it about time that we stop passing the buck? Shouldn't the powers that be control the more serious infringements which abound on the roads of this tiny speck in the Mediterranean? Dangerous driving, failing to use indicators, drunk driving, car/bus/taxis pollution, failing to stop at stop signs, etc... and of course, parking on bus stops.

to all of you who commented on my article..I thank you ! However if more citizens were like me and others who put pen to paper to air these every day abuse of the law on our island, I am certain that the authorities would wake up and do their duty.
In fact, this morning I drove past the mentioned bus stop and it was vacant.
Franco Farrugia is very right in commenting about the lawlessness on the Maltese roads.
The blame rests with the Minister of Police as I am sure that he is aware of the dangerous behaviour of most Maltese drivers.
Increasing the fines for not wearing a seatbelt,is a joke!! If one does not wear a seatbelt,he/she is only endangering himself.
When people park any which way ,drive like maniacs, fail to stop at STOP SIGNS or do not understand a GIVEWAY sign and cannot be bothered to learn that the INDICATORS are meant to show that the car is turning left or right..these idiots are endangering other people's lives! SO, fines for these contraventions should be increased and the police, wardens should apply the law to ALL and sundry!
By the way,I hope Peter Gee is joking.

mr sammut, you live in sweiqi, how about the dangerous parking outside the corner store, sweiqi road, the shops near the butchers, all the driving the wrong way, every day and night behind bay street etc....there is no control by wardens or police

@ Franco Farrugia. Right you are. Come along on a Saturday night to Marsascala and you see cars parked double and sometimes treble parked in Triq Sant Antnin and Triq ix-Xatt with no police in sight. Forget the wardens as they only work Monday to Saturday; besides they are very selective when issueing tickets!

Have you considered the possibility that the car concerned belongs to the warden that is usually seen patroling up and down this same road everyday

You notice areas around Malta and Gozo where there is a screaming absence of the law when it comes to illegal parking. I am sure everyone has personal experiences of areas where everyone can park illegally and there is no warden or policemen within sight. I can mention two areas where this is the case.
The first case takes us to Msida, a few metres away from the Police Station - I am referring to a particular cafe' area on the road from Ta' Xbiex to Msida. Here, traffic is nearly always forced to be reduced to a bottle-neck, using one lane. Not the first time either that uniformed people are seen coming in and out of the establshment.
The second case takes us to Hamrun, the main street in front of Our Lady of Conception Parish Church. At a particular corner, there is a favourite pastizzeria and the parking here is absolutely atrocious. Again, not a sign of the law!
So, is the law equal for all? Don't make me laugh!

Question for the Warden's head office:

Are Warden's permitted to drive round Malta without wearing a seat belt?
I would really appreciate a reply as I come across this everyday.
