Man killed in collision with ambulance

A man was killed in a collision between a car and an ambulance responding to a 999 call, police said yesterday.

Hampshire Police said the crash happened near the racecourse on the Isle of Wight yesterday in the afternoon.

One man in the car was pronounced dead at the scene and another person suffered "very serious injuries", the force spokeswoman said.

But members of the public who were in the ambulance at the time of the crash escaped unhurt and were transferred to another ambulance.

A Hampshire Police spokesman said: "Police were called after a serious crash between a car and an ambulance in East Cowes Road, near the racecourse on the Isle of Wight.

"The ambulance was responding when the crash took place and those members of the public on board were not harmed and have been transferred to another ambulance.

"A man who was travelling in the car has been pronounced dead at the scene, and one other person involved has very serious injuries."

She said the police, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the Air Ambulance were all on scene.
