Migrants jailed for using false passports
Two immigrants who tried to leave the island for Spain using false Italian ID cards and passports were yesterday jailed for six months each after admitting to the charges.
Indian Gurinder Singh, 40, and 21-year-old Abdulmonaf Mohammed Fusseini from Niger both pleaded guilty to being in possession of and using false passports and ID cards when trying to board a Ryanair flight to Spain on Thursday.
Aided by an interpreter, Mr Singh told Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona he deeply regretted what he had done but the magistrate said his hands were tied insofar as punishment was concerned. He jailed both men for six months each in a sitting that was over within minutes.
Police Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi prosecuted. Lawyer Mark Busuttil was defence counsel.

I commend the judge for not giving them a suspended sentence. Although I think the sentence coould have been harsher for the sake of international and Maltese security.

Maltese break the law too. But migrants seem to live and thrive in illegality. They come in illegally without documents, money or belongings. They try to leave illegally. While in Malta their activities do not seem to be always blessed with legality.
The man from Niger does not qualify for refugee status and should be repatriated immediately even before he serves his sentence. An Indian certainly does not qualify as a refugee and he should be put on the first plane back to his country.
And why does a magistrate have to apologize to apply the law and say that her hands are tied?
