Contracts for restoration of bastions awarded
Six contracts amounting to almost €10 million have been awarded for the restoration of the Valletta and Vittoriosa bastions, and for the consolidation of the unstable walls of Mdina and the Gozo Citadel. More contracts are to be given in future.
Resources minister George Pullicino said the fortifications formed an integral part of Malta’s historic landscape and the effort that is necessary to redress this state of affairs could only materialise through European Regional Development Fund support. In fact, 85 percent of the money required for the project would be coming from the fund with the Maltese government forking out the additional 15 percent, adding up €36 million.
Once complete, the works would serve to recuperate various areas currently unutilised, making them available for cultural activities or other purposes, adding to their overall rehabilitation and greater integration into the tourism product.
The project would also improve the poor state of repair and presentation of the country's military architecture.

I hope that some of the work is allocated to the company restoring Fort Manoel which I visited today. The effort, skill and planning is brilliant, it will be a star historical attraction when it's completed. The MIDI group are to be commended for their sympathetic restoration to date and indeed the people who are doing the work. Prosit.

Who is going to check that the work is being done correctly ? Who is going to check that the person checking is not being paid to close an eye ?

And what about the equally unstable walls of St. Angelo? The fact that the fort falls under the care of Heritage Malta which seems to be lacking funds is no excuse to wash our hands of the maintenancen needed in the fort. St. Angelo requires attention FAST before we lose it.
It will avail us nothing to lament the loss afterwards. Act now if you have the will and our heritage at heart.

At last good news re the restoration of Malta's old fortifications. I hope that to complete the job will not actually take longer than it took the knights to built the bastions.
