Leaders Inter moved four points clear in Serie A after a remarkable 5-3 win over Palermo on Thursday in which the champions were 4-0 up at halftime before almost throwing victory away.
Second-placed Juventus threw down the gauntlet on Wednesday with a 5-1 thrashing of high-flying Sampdoria and Jose Mourinho's Inter side rose to the challenge with a dominant home performance -- in the first period at least.
Samuel Eto'o opened the scoring with a seventh minute penalty and strike partner Mario Balotelli then netted twice before Eto'o grabbed the fourth just before the break.
Palermo stormed back in the second period through Fabrizio Miccoli's superb double and an Abel Hernandez goal but Inter substitute Diego Milito sealed the win late on.
