Police said yesterday they had charged West Ham United defender Calum Davenport with assaulting a woman shortly before he was stabbed at his mother’s home in August.

Davenport, 26, was stabbed in both legs during the attack at the house in Bedford and underwent emergency surgery for his injuries.

“Professional footballer Calum Davenport has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm on a woman following an incident in Bedford on August 22,” police said.

The player has been released on police bail and is due to appear at Bedford Magistrates Court on Nov. 10. Police said the alleged incident had occurred on the same night Davenport was injured but gave no further details.

A 25-year-old man has already been charged with causing Davenport grievous bodily harm with intent and also causing actual bodily harm to the footballer’s 49-year-old mother.
