More berths planned
The Maritime Authority has 455 pending applications for berths at the marinas in Msida and Ta’ Xbiex and 122 others for berths at Mġarr.
The three marinas at present provide 995 berths. Transport Minister Austin Gatt told the House that the authority was recommending the development of new permanent marinas at Sa Maison and the Menqa at Marsa and an increase of berthing spaces for Ta’ Xbiex and on the north side of Manoel Island. This would make 860 more berthing spaces available.
Temporary marinas would also be developed at Salina, Ta’ Xbiex, Kalkara, Xemxija and Mġarr, providing 200 additional berthing spaces in Malta and 100 in Gozo.

If one goes on the following sites list below, one would learn why we stated that the yacht marina within the Ta' Xbiex area goes against our marine life and our shore heritage which gave the name of Ta' Xbiex, when fishermen from Msida and Gzira used to put up nets to be repaired and dried afterwards within this particulr area when they fill our rock shore with concrete. We from the surrounding area of Ta' Xbiex, Gzira and Msida all agreed and signed that it is shamefull on the Ministry of the Hon. Minister Gatt and the Malta Maritime Authority who are still moving ahead with this project of our area, after the many persons that had and are still signing the original petition. So far many are still approaching us to signing it or otherwise prefere as to go on site to sign. Good to note that the Local Council of Ta' Xbiex recently all sides, that is from the Labour Party and that of Nationalist Party all had now objected against this project and wrote to the Minister. If you are also against this destruction of this Marine life of Ta' Xbiex, then it would make more sence if you would go on to this site:- http:taxbiex@epetitions.net .......and put or add your name with the many others (over 3950) who signed the original paper sheets of our petition. http://www.independent.com.mt/news.asp?newsitemid=91973 http://www.maltatoday.com.mt/2009/09/13/l8.html http://www.maltatoday.com.mt/2009/09/02/l2.html Go on and sign too...... http://taxbiex.epetitons.net

Absolutely Mr. Raymond Sammut, I completely agree !!
Actually, that is how species spread around the world's marine environment. Just consider Birzebugia Bay for instance. When I was young, I used to snorkel around Wied Il Buni which splendoured with marine life. I just cannot say the same today. I am very sure that ballast water is discharged there from ships and you know what ballast water contains as far as microrganisms are concerned. !!!

These are excellent business-type developments for Malta. Another big plus for Austin Gatt. These type of developments are also big in many parts of the Australian coastal regions and rivers. A frequent issue that comes up, however, is in regard to facilities for boat wastes, namely, sewage and bilge water. Without these facilities, some boats could, while moored, discharge waste materials into the marina waters. This would have a gross negative impact on Maltese coastal waters and habitat. Why is it that Minister Austin Gatt is not being questioned in the House on this very important issue?
