901 workers found working illegally in five months
Inspectors of the Employment and Training Corporation found 901 people working illegally between January and May, Social Policy Minister John Dalli said. They included 160 foreigners.
The minister said in reply to a parliamentary question, that during the same period, 395 employers were arraigned for engaging people illegally. 131 regularised their situation before their cases were concluded, and were fined €58 each.
In the 34 court cases won by the ETC, the guilty employers were fined a total of €4,451.

The penalty is just an incentive to break the law. Really it pays to employ persons illegally.
Now one knows the reason why there are so many illegal workers around. Probably the majority of them are registering for work and getting social benefits. Let us be more serious and stop playing the fool.

@D.Bonello
I have worked for 17 year in europe legaly and never had any problems. My point regarding illegal immigrnts listed as locals is to the fact that they hold a temporary Maltese ID card.
So I am sure that most of the so called locals were them. If not, then there is something wrong with the ETC for everybody got eyes and see that there are illegal immigrants working illegaly in every corner of this once beutyfull Island of Malta.

So you get a 58 euro fine for illegally employing any number of 'illegals' assuming you get maybe after a couple of years, and you decide to pay up - what a massive deterent, or should I say sick joke!

901 ONLY ? And 160 foreigners ONLY? How can so many people get away with it on this very little piece of rock?
These people never paid Social Security contributions and no tax. So they should be made to pay from the beginning with a minimum of six months? Those employing them should be fined heavily and immediately. This should be in the papers every month to make people aware. No wonder we have this scandalous deficit!!

With pathetic fines like those and such a poor level of enforcement . . . it is no wonder this abusive practice is widespread . . . are we really expected to believe that only 901 people working illegally could be found . . . in five whole months?? Are we really expected to believe that those fines serve as any deterrent?? If an employer engages an illegal worker for a mere week, gets caught and pays the fine, he will still have made a saving ! ! I am sure that there are cases where illegal workers are employed for far longer periods than that . . . . ! Do the Maths people . . . and GET REAL!

Jien miniex pro immigranti biss l argument hawn mghandux jaqa fuq dil haga. L aktar haga li ghandna ghalfejn niddiskutu hu kif dawn n nies hadmu nies illegalment al alla biss jaf kemm, ghamlu profit min fuqhom, ma halsux t taxxi u wehlu biss multa ta 130 euros. Imbaghad ghax l haddiem qed jitlob 6 euros mizeri, araw lil assocazzjonijiet favur l employers jigu inewwhu.
Jien ma nafx biss nghixu f'pajjiz fejn l medicini jistaw jilhqu prezzijiet ridikoli u hadd ma jghid xejn. Fejn nies li inqabdu fi skandlu tal VAT, jispiccaw jehlu sentenza farsa u fejn nies li inqabdu ihaddmu nies ILLEGALMENT jispiccaw jehlu multa terrifikanti ta 130 euros. Imbaghad alla hares jaghmel xi haga l malti tipiku ghax naghmlu show bih.

The difference is that (for Non African) that is their only income, while the other one is getting a daily pocket money & telecards to call home (that in most time he is telling Malta is nice & they should join him) on top of that he is working without paying tax.
To give you an example on a different subject: Hunting by the only resident in Comino is legal, as he is the only person in Malta hunting for living, but a hunter that kills to eat a bird while he has his fridge full of meat is totally a different scenario. Hope this helps to understand the difference.
See the news & you know who is the most trouble maker, one comes here to make a living & improove his life, & the other one comes to create trouble. Once i heard that the correctional services in Kording are like being in the center of the Green Square in Tripoli.
Best of whorst i prefer to have 100 saints then one devil in my country.
& this is for the security side of it

What a joke! In one week I can find you at least another thousand illegal workers by going round the building sites all over the island. Minister Dalli shouldn't accept such incompetence from the ETC.

The fines are a joke. An employer would rather take the risk as financially he would gain a lot. It's about time irregularities start being truly penalised in this pathetic republic

Come on @J.Micallef and Mario, have you ever worked abroad outside your country of birth that is i mean try and work in the UK i think you might come back and form a difference of opinion my friend. and i agree with Galea.L. Most foreigners in the UK especially the Asian and the Black community are treated as second class citizens we all read the news and watch the Box/Telly/tv/ call what you will - don't we?

Good questions. Pity you still find those among us who prefer to defend the foreigners whether illegal immigrants or otherwise and of whatever colour instead of defending their Maltese brethren.

Why does it make a difference to you if they come from Africa or not?? I revert the question to you my fellow Maltese citizen..
How many Eastern Europeans did they find??
Why does it make a difference to you if they come from Africa or not, working Illegal is always illegal, both if you have white or darker skin..
Let's all stop throwing such comments!!!!

To all that may be carried out as soon as reading the word illegal (and in many cases they do not read the article) and start shooting left, right and center please note that foreigners may include EU citizens or European citizens that are still asked to have the authority’s permission to work in Malta.
