Overall, the recently-announced transport reform appears very promising and encouraging, should it bear fruit at the specified time. However, it may be worthwhile raising the following issues:

Any reputable bus company coming to Malta would need to safeguard its reputation by ensuring it sets its own high standards. This would entail having no illegal emissions.

Staff must be disciplined when the rules are not adhered to, such as when not wearing a uniform at all times.

Breathalyser tests should be randomly taken each morning.

All passenger complaints need to be addressed with the courtesy they merit.

I note that inspectors will be retained. They would therefore be required to gain respect from the public by addressing passenger queries, checking tickets, performing spot checks on buses, wearing smart uniforms and not being over friendly with drivers. This would entail disciplining drivers on ticket abnormalities, the use of mobile phones while driving, short changing, route detours and non-conformity to the Highway Code.

Be assured that any reputable firm coming to Malta would enforce the points above.

At present, Malta's bus fares are well below the levels in other EU countries, as are the new quoted rates. It may be that the government is subsidising them as a sweetener. However, should they need to rise in due course they will still be well below the average for a dependable, comfortable, emission-free and mannerly service.
