The Żurrieq half marathon, first held in 1998 and considered by many as a testing run ahead of the more gruelling three-day Malta International Challenge, will be held on Sunday.

Under the sponsorship of Maxim Sport Nutrition, the race in Żurrieq is an ideal challenge for flatlanders.

The start will be at the village main square and finishes in the same location after passing through the picturesque towns of Safi, Kirkop, Mqabba, Qrendi and Siġġiewi.

Last year, Jonathan Balzan won the race in 1:12:28 after five years of dominance by Belgian runner Christian Nemeth.

Balzan's St Patrick's AC team-mate Haithem Kisheim was second and Brian Magri third.

Carol Walsh was the first runner home in the women's race in 1:27:36. Carmen Hili was second and Josann Attard third.

Application forms and detailed information may be found on the event's website www.halfmarathon.org.

Also on Sunday, a 1.5km family fun run will be held in Żurrieq.

Those intending to take part in this race are asked to register at the start at 8 a.m.
