School opens 'learning support zone'
A Learning Support Zone to help pupils with social and emotional difficulties was inaugurated this morning at the boys' secondary school at Ta' Paris in Birkirkara.
Teacher Aaron Borg explained that pupils will be referred to the support zone for evaluation and assistance according to their needs, be they academic or behavioural, the aim being to help them integrate better in the mainstream educational system. Similar support zones exist in a number of other schools.
Education Minister Dolores Cristina praised St Theresa College - of which the school forms part - for inaugurating the support zone, saying it was part of the ongoing reform of secondary schools.

@Philip Grech
The LSZ at B'Kara is fully equipped with both physical and human resources to cater for a variety of student needs. It is not a way of segragating but rather to integrate them within the mainstream. Some students do need encouragement and skills to cope with the regular mainstream class and that is what the aim of the LSZ is!!! It is not a failure but indeed another asset for the benefit of the students attending the school.

Well done to Saint Theresa College. We parents are really proud that our children such a dynamic and innovative school within this college. Enthusiasm and energy are rules of the day. Its really a pity that sometimes not informed people and supposidly representative bodies, take negative stands against very good practices. WELL DONE... REALLY

Best wishes to the school and its hard-working staff. The article is a little too telegraphic and does not quite explain what a learning support zone is intened for, it is therefore understandable that some readers, especially if out of touch with the difficulties that are faced everyday in these schools, might comment negatively.
Well-done do the Principal , the Head of School, and the dedicated teachers - let's have these in all schools.

Why is this news if learning support zones have already been introduced elsewhere?
How come this is not an admission of the school's failure to accomodate students when to "integrate" them, they exclude them?

fine as long as it does not degenerate into a convenient way of segregating children that need more attention in a classroom situation.
