Gonzi, Fenech have full confidence in police corps

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said yesterday that both he and Finance Minister Tonio Fenech had full confidence in the Police Corps.

Dr Gonzi was reacting to calls by Labour deputy leader Anġlu Farrugia to make a parliamentary statement following media reports on Sunday that Minister Fenech had made serious allegations about the Police Corps during a recent meeting of the Nationalist parliamentary group.

The Prime Minister said the opposition was trying to establish a strange custom in expecting the government to make a statement every time newspapers, especially those pertaining to the opposition, published similar reports.

Dr Farrugia had requested the Prime Minister to confirm or deny that the Police Corps was on the agenda of the Nationalist Parliamentary Group.

Dr Gonzi declared that the House was not the place where affairs pertaining to parliamentary groups were to be discussed.

Opposition Whip Joe Mizzi immediately called for quorum because of what he said was "the Prime Minister's attitude in treating Parliament" in such a way.

The House was suspended and resumed after five minutes.
