6,912 persons refused licence until fines are paid
6,912 persons did not have their driving licence renewed immediately this year because they had not settled pending fines, Transport Miister Austin Gatt has told parliament.
Meanwhile, the police between January and September issued 47,872 fines for traffic violations, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said in reply to a parliamentary question.

@Lawrence Attard, You are being given a golden opportunity to capture policemen and wardens breaking laws and regulations and you don't do it. A digital camera costs very little nowadays.
Stop complaining and take photos of what you alleged is happening and send them to the police commissioner. If you decide not to do it anonymously then you can complain here that the police commissioner is ignoring evidence of abuses by the police. That would be a scoop!

Is it the DRIVING licence or CAR licence? I think it is more likely the car licence due for the year.
Incidentally, since CVA payments are also included, is the company privately owned or government owned? If it is government owned, how come that they are part of the consortium who will bid for the public transport in Malta? Isn't this a sort of partial nationalisatiion? On the other hand if the company is privately owned, how come that they have positive (favoured) discrimination in the payment of fines? (since car licences cannot be issued if one does not clear the CVA payment, including the extortionate interest?
Any answers Transport Minister Dr Gatt? (Ghandek cans!!!!!!!!)

"next step, send them to your member of parliament,"
Typical Maltese behaviour. I've seen cases where people complain/ask ministers what their kids should do to get higher scholastic marks.
Mick, if that were a problem, I'd start by correcting the public.
This clearly isn't a financial problem. People could be fined in cents or in millions, still they don't care (or some don't even know) about traffic laws.

How much are we sure that these 6912 persons are not driving their cars without license and of course insurance to the detriment of other drivers who unfortunately can be involved in a accident with them?

I am confused here. Should this not be refusal of "Road Fund Licence" renewal rather than the driving licence.

If the Police or wardens go for a walk, starting from in front the St.Julians Police Station, and ending at The Ferries in Sliema, every time they do this, they would surely book at least 20-25 vehicles. At ant time of the day, especially in the evenings, there are cars parked on yellow lines, at the corner of a street, on bus stops (especially the one at Ghar-id-Dud, next to the Preluna Hotel), in front of garages, on the pavement, under the No Parking and the Towing signs, double and triple parking (especially in front of the St.Julians Police Station), on Zebra Crossing (especially the one going up the hill to the Regional Road, next to the St.Julians Police Station - again), and many more contraventions. What happened to the Traffic Police section? We only see them accompanying a V.I.P. or at a ceremony. Police Commissioner please note that not everybody is doing his duty. Has Malta become a land of the jungle, where the mighty reigns?

@ L Attard
And what about the indicators????? A lot of drivers (i would say around 80%) don't bother to put the indicators on when turning

I do not condone of any 'blue eyed boys' getting their licenses renewed without paying outstanding fines as you put it.
However should you know of such cases, I suggest you bring them forward to the competent authorities instead of insinuating such statements.

yes mr attard you are so right, all that Dr Gatt or Mr Rizzo have to do is drive by Giormina and Andrews's bar, in st paul's bay and birkirkara respectively, for a week, passing by maybe 4 times a day
as you say, there will be warden's cars and police cars double parked or 'illegally' parked in the vicinity
once I saw the previous president being driven by with a police car double parked and blocking psaila street, I wonder if anything ever happened
as to blue eyed boys there are so many of them, a well known 'authority' living in st paul's bay parks his car fregularly in open defiance of rules, yet you never see a ticket stuck to the windscreen and there are so many more
mind you there were occasions when I reported such flagrant abuses but, like most other citizens, I have now lost any hope and given up- I mean when you recall that both ADT and MEPA suspended report lines without informing anybody, why bother!!

Perhaps a more searching question might be, all the money from these fines is going exactly where? Road improvements? Better signage? Training Wardens? or into the party coffers? We will never get the answer I'm sure!!

@ Lawrence Attard,
first of all I would seriously check whether that take-away is operating under a valid planning permit. Then I would quit complaining on newspaper blogs, get into the balcony or the window or my house with a digital camera and start snapping photos of every double parked vehicle . . . especially the wardens' ones and those of the police . . . next step, send them to your member of parliament, to the newspapers and the minister responsible . . . and make sure the numberplates of the vehicles in question show clearly on the photo!

"As an example, why do drivers in Malta ignore Stop Signs? In Canada the police always give tickets for such an infringement."
Personally, I always go like a metre over the thick white line (behind which you're supposed to stop) because if I stop at the line, I can't see a thing. For some reason, there's always a van or a 4x4 parked on the corner.
What concerns me more is the number of cars that run a red light. A couple of cameras near the Financial Centre would greatly increase the number of fines, because if I got a euro for every car that runs a red light there, I could stop working.

I am sure that if Mr. Austin Gatt would tell the Police Commissioner to enforce all the traffic laws there would be more than triple that amount of traffice tickets issued.
As an example, why do drivers in Malta ignore Stop Signs? In Canada the police always give tickets for such an infringement.
Another example, why do people double park even when there are empty parking spots in the street. I live in front of a take-away shop, the street is always blocked between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., including Warden cars and Police cars who stop to buy there.
Why do the police never give out Speeding tickets? Where I live it is like living on a Race Track in Monza.
How many people still throw out cigarette butts on the ground even though it is illegal. All the Police Commissioner has to do is visit St. Julians Police Station. The pavement in front of the Station is littered with cigarette butts. Where do Policemen who are on duty during Marches and processions throw their cigarette butts? In the old days they were not allowed to smoke in public while on duty.
I hope someone will take action.

Interesting Dr Gatt. Could you please tell me how many blue eyed boys had their licence renewed without paying their fines?

Can we see the figures after speed cameras are deducted? Call me cynical but I don't imagine there would be many.
