England rout Malta in Women's football
Malta's women's football team went down 8-0 to England in a Group Five World Cup qualifier last night in Blackpool.
It was a stroll in the park for England's team, which had seven changes from the squad which took part in the Euro 2009 final last month.
Everton's Fara Williams scored a hit a hat-trick while Maltese defender Natasha Pace was sent off on the hour.
Malta's team also went down 13-0 to Spain last month.
The other goals came from England captain Faye White, who opened the score after eight minutes, Williams in the 24th, Jess Clarke in the 37th minute, Williams again just before the break and again early in the second half.
Clarke scored again in the 76th minute and substitute Emily Westwood followed a minute later. Rachel Unitt scored the last within minutes of the end of the game.

Our ladies are to be commended for their courage in facing teams who are light years ahead of them in skills, physique and experience. On the other hand I strongly condemn whoever organises these David/Goliath encounters knowing fully well that our football standard is rock bottom and worse and we'll always be humiliated when facing such teams. Unless of course the free trips abroad are just an incentive to compensate the players and organisers for all their sacrifices. Perhaps we can match England's or Spain's ladies team with our men's National team to have a more balanced encounter. Even then I won't hesitate to bet on another Maltese fiasco.
