Greater access to disabled
Local council offices are being made more accessible to the disabled by equipping them with more facilities and assistance.
Pierre Mejlaq, head of the Parliamentary Secretariat for Public Consultation, said discussions were under way with local councils to install the necessary amenities in two years.
The announcement coincided with the launch of revised material listing services for the disabled by the National Commission For Persons with Disability.
Commission president Joseph Camilleri emphasised that although the material was readily available, local councils were obliged to offer similar advice.
The material, which includes two booklets, in English and in Maltese, a recording and DVD, will be revised every three years to include more facilities and any changes in their contact details.
Booklet editor Alfred Bezzina said the material was mostly financed by the Services and Benefits for Persons with Disability Fund and will be distributed to those registered with the commission and anyone who was actively in contact with the disabled, including local councils.

I fully support the question that the disabled should and must have all the respect and amenities to make life easier for them. However, i dont think that this should be done to the expense of others. A point in question are the corner ramps installed some years ago whereby all pavement corners in Sliema where reconstructed in a way to make them usable by the diabled. these have been done in a way that they are perfect for the disabled but dangerous to the normal citizens , whereby we have had people slipping and breaking their limbs and even to the extent of broken teeth. These are dangerous due to the hiogh gradient they were constructed . Surely there are better ways of dealing with the problem.
