@ Mark Johnson Their priority is drugs; but whenever they encounter other infringments such as expired road licence, stolen goods and apparent drunkness; they are handed to the police for further action from their end.

Thanks for the replies. I think it right that ordinary citizens with nothing to hide would willingly help the soldiers. Are they searching for only drugs though? If so, then could they not check for drivers over the drink drive alcohol limit? And what about checking that the vehicle is roadworthy, tyre treads, lights, etc?

@ A Charles very well said. Mr. Mark Johnson please be assured that these road checks by the AFM are within the law. In fact the soldiers are always under the command of an officer who carries the responsibilities of a Police Inspector i.e. he has the power to arrest. Only people with criminal intent would consider running away from a road checkpoint whether it is carried out by the Army or the Police. Whoever tried it had a very nasty surprise!

What's wrong with being stopped and checked by security forces unless you have something to hide?

I have been stopped many times at army checkpoints and I can honestly say that the soldiers were always very civil and courteous. Unlike policemen, who are quick to address you by calling you alien names such as Joey, Chally etc., soldiers address you as "Sir".

Third World Country!!!! Arresting 2 people for simple possesion of the least harmful substance around, while drunk beasts drive around our Third World roads as if there is no tomorrow! Get your priorities right!!! Stop wasting people's money, court time and these people's lives!!!

What is the NEWS here the cannabis find OR the fact that we still have army check points, just like we did during the dark ages of the 80s?
The Army is there to defend the nation not to do police work, it is both ridiculous and embarrassing that in this day and age this practice is still going on. I remember taking a foreign client back to his 5 star hotel and on the opposite side of regional road he saw a Army road block, his comments were " looks like Northern Ireland during the troubles".

Under what authority do they stop vehicles? Are they looking for only drugs? If so, could they not also check for drunk drivers, condition of vehicle etc? Do you have to stop for them to check your car? Are they working to assist police? The idea of an army checkpoint sounds very much like a military dictatorship! Did anyone ever challenge the legality of this?
