Church to close printing press
The Church said today that it will close down the printing press at the Media Centre because of financial difficulties.
The eight workers at the press will be absorbed by other sections of the archdiocese. The press will close in January 2010.
The Curia said the printing press needed substantial investment to be competitive, as well as a substantial increase in sales, but this did not appear viable given market conditions.
The Church newspaper Il-Gens last week ceased publication in print format and is now published online only.

@ Joseph Stephen Galea. Very well said.
One has to be effective in the message the Church is giving to her flock. Lehen is-Sewwa is far much better than Il-Gens because it targets the needs of the readers, by excellent articles by various and excellent authors, (although the quality of the paper must improve). My mother likes the women's section, I as a cathecist use it for lessons, my father for religious news (and my Grandma to see who has any death anniversary!)
One needs to be careful by this dangerous and critical move. People nowadays are bombarded with full-colour thick paper magazines which do not have any spiritual issues to think of, just materialism, materialism and if there is any space, materialism.
You have to raise a voice above this junk!

Jien ma dahhaltx politika imma ktibt bis-sens u dik li hija l-verita'. Setghet kienet bil-kontra. Imma issa se ndahhala l-politika la ma hallejtnix neutrali. Kieku il-laburisti mohhom maghluq u ma jixtrux lanqas it-Times, kieku anki t-Times ikollha tghalaq. Fejn hemm l-ghaqda hemm is-sahha haga li n-nazzjonalisti uzawa kemm il-darba biex jilhqu ghanijiet parteggani, filwaqt li l-laburisti, ghax Malta l-ewwel u qabel kollox, ma jaslux li jtellfu l-hobza ta' kuljum lil haddiema bhalhom. Nawgura lit-Times ikomplu fit-triq li qabdu halli jkunu dejjem aktar imparzjali. B'hekk biss gazzetta popolari bhat-Times tibqa fic-cirkulazzjoni.

All newspapers will have to change to digital in the near future! ...and printing will become a luxury!
I think this Printing Press handled mostly "small runs" ...a market that has been taken over by new digital machines these days...popping up everywhere...even on the net!

Gazzetta tal-Knisja suppost qeda biex twassal messagg lil fidili. Ma taghmilx sens li jkollok gazzetta biex jaqrawa nies li ma jinteressahhomx il-messagg. Pero gazzetta tista tghati palata lil xi partit jew iehor u hawn il-problema li ghandha l-gazzetta tal-Knisja. Qeda tikkompeti mal- gazzetti nazzjonalisti li qed fuq l-istess binarju. Kieku l-Gens kienet gazzetta veru indipendenti politikament, kieku ma kienetx tfalli ghax tilhaq aktar qarrejja. Min xarbu kielu l-bakkaljaw.

Believe it or not.....
APS Design work was being given to private commercial entity for the last 5 years or so...
And even some printing was done elsewhere!
Is this charity begins at home?

What is happening ?
1. Il-Hajja and Il-Gens close down ... but LEHEN IS=SEWWA still survives.
2. Media Centre printing press closing down ... yet Veritas and Salesian Press still survive.
3. RTK following declines ... yet Radju Maria getting stronger
4. Media Centre TV Unit put up one programme a week on TVM ... MSSP take over at least three: Sejjahtli (Favourite TV), Ucuh (Net TV) and religius programme on One TV
5. Il-Qarrej Nisrani close down in Valletta and Hamrun ... yet CAK open the largest Religious shop.
I hope one tries to understand.

Therefore, with the same reasoning, the Church should close down RTK radio!

It's all about money. Was GENS justified in incurring more losses or does it act as a reference of spreading Catholic values and ideals?

@Ernest Vella Christianity in Malta is not going to recuperate its losses through the Press. That is a very easy-going, comfortable way of putting off things to finger-tip propaganda which, after all, is NOT evangelization. What we need are holy priests, who understand and live the Bible, who do not see in wooden idols, feasts and daily rituals ways of calling people back to a religion of conservation but who go out, thread rough paths and look for the lost sheep to instil in them Faith, which is different from "religion". That is why I say we should start afresh, re-evangelizing in Faith (not religion) all true christians alike. I would not mind a Reformist-Catholic relationship at all if it benefits our faith and maturity, as I would not mind starting from scratch all over again with a new clergy who know and understand what real christianity means. Times are hard and we have to do things seriously, away from the oldfogyish southern mentality which has made a shambles of our faith. That is why the Church has to look at all alike, both clergy and faithful, as it often happens we have more mature laymen than priests themselves.

Strange very Strange when considering the ammount of printing done by all churches in and APS . Its either not good or too excpensive.I dont think it is appropriate for the Church in Malta just to close down an enterprise. They have to make it work. This is a very bad example. The managment of APS bank surely they can make it work. Are you going to close RTK now? I dont think so altough its loosing a lot of money.First il-gens now the press. I excpected a better example from the church this is not going to reflect good on small businesses. Xejn mhu xejn Mons.

what a loss for Christianity in Malta....I don't agree with such a decision in a time when Christianity is attacked openly from the anti-church world.
