In spite of the international recession and millions of job losses - some six million in the UK alone - Malta's unemployment rate stands at 7.2 per cent, one of the lowest in Europe. Compared to Spain's unemployment rate which has reached 18.9 per cent, to Latvia's at 18.3 per cent and Ireland's at 12.5 per cent I think that Malta is performing very well indeed.

Budget 2010 is on the horizon and it is going to be very difficult to please all the stakeholders. As the President of the Chamber of Commerce warned, let common sense prevail and may all the parties work together to continue safeguarding Malta's achievements.
