Safeguarding important sites in Paola

The newly-founded Fondazzjoni Wirt Paola, which was launched recently, aims to address the natural, cultural and archaeological assets of Paola.

The foundation is planning to work towards the purpose of not only promoting already well-established sites within Paola, but also helping in the conservation, restoration and ultimate maintenance of several important sites.

Chairman and founder of Fondazzjoni Wirt Paola Ronnie Calleja spoke of Paola's rich heritage, lamenting that this is not receiving the attention it rightly deserves.

Apart from the World Heritage Site of the Hypogeum, there are a considerable number of key sites within the locality that are in need of expert intervention.

Mr Calleja said the foundation is ready to meet all those who can help in safeguarding the heritage of Paola, citing the fact that the Paola mayor himself showed great interest in the initiative and offered the local council's full support. Meanwhile, heritage consultants are exploring ways of tapping EU funds which would serve well in helping restore, conserve and upgrade certain key sites.
