Christopher Cutajar, assistant secretary, GWU Youths, was totally incorrect when he said in his letter (October 23) that a The Times editorial on the rebranding of the General Workers' Union had described the union as a political trade union that has worked against the workers' interests.

Arguing about the union's alliance with the Labour Party, the newspaper's editorial said: "This is why so many look at the GWU as a political trade union. This has generally worked against its interests."

The editorial is not saying that the union has specifically worked against the workers' interests, as Mr Cutajar says in his letter, but that its alliance with a political party works against its interests.

In fact, the editorial goes on to say: "Which is not to say that the union has not done any good to its members..." etc., etc.
