Updated: Romanian charged with smuggling cocaine
Mihai Miu, 56, of Romania, has been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to smuggling 1.1 kilos of cocaine.
The cocaine was found by sharp eyed Customs officers in the sole of his shoes on his arrival at Malta International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
The police said that Mr Miu, who resides in Spain, was stopped after he was seen acting in a suspicious manner. He had arrived in Malta on a flight from Dusseldorf.
It is not the first time that the man came to Malta.
An inquiry is being held by Magistrate Audrey Demicoli.

AN example of acting in a suspicious manneris, when for instance the traveller will look nervous or over excited as soon as he catch a glimpise of a uniformed official. Or when a driver or passenger in a car are seen throwing something out of the car, when there is a roadblock taking place.

Acting suspiciously.
With a pound extra in weight in each shoe, I would have thought that dragging his feet along the floor might raise a slight element of suspicion - or perhaps he had it all in one shoe rather than half in each LOL.

@ Mr Korsetn.
please be informed that in winter no direct connection from malta to romania exists. and one of the options is to go through dusserdolf. but anyway this was not the case as he was coming from spain. it seems that here all are scribbling without not even reading the article. regarding the item that he was acting in a suspicious manner, i can confirm that customs personnel get the proper training to detect this. any is not nice that some people try to make fun of this.

@ G Debono
Acting in a suspicious manner means we have heard your plans while eavesdropping on all telephone, mobile, email, messenger and other types of communication.

With over half a kilo of coke in each shoe, I don't think he would be doing a lot of jumping. And if he did, there would probably be a cloud of suspicious white dust.
Anyway, these people usually don't come with luggage, and a single man with only hand luggage and presumably without a suit, laptop and other business paraphernalia, is by definition suspicious. Especially this one, since he's neither German nor Maltese. Dutch would have been understandable, because Düsseldorf is popular with many Dutch, but Romania? That's on the other side of Europe.
"It is not the first time that the man came to Malta."
I'm willing to bet it'll be the last time, though. But it may be a while before he leaves again.

meanwhile i congratulate the persons behind this arrest for this deadly hard drug. these are the results we want and not some petty joint smoker being arrested and brought to court!!

Wouldn't it be nice if for once, instead of apprehending the so-called 'mules', the authorities would follow a person "acting in a suspicious manner" to see where he/she goes with the drug. I don't think that the European Free Market policies extend to drugs ... so these people must have contacts in Malta.

Can someone explain to me what "seem acting in a suspicious manner" means? What suspicious manner? Jumping up and down and nibbling a banana?
