We would like to rectify any misconceptions which may have arisen as a result of letters by Robert Micallef and Joseph J. Baldacchino (October 15 and 17 respectively) referring to a breakfast event held recently in Valletta.

The main objective of the Nestlé Fitness breakfast events was to raise more awareness about the importance of opting to start your day with a healthy breakfast, within the greater context of a healthy lifestyle. Undoubtedly, breakfast is one of the major pillars in leading to a healthy lifestyle as it is the meal that kick-starts our metabolic rate and helps us through the endeavours of our daily commitments.

Whole grain cereal is just one of a wide variety of breakfast options that qualifies as healthy and is low in sugars.

The complimentary cereal breakfast given out during these events offered a good balance for whoever intends following a healthy eating regime. One serving of the cereal referred to by Mr Micallef actually contains only nine per cent of the sugar intake suggested by the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for individuals without any particular conditions, therefore substantially lower in sugar content when compared to the official RDA based on a 2,000 Kcal diet.

The golden rule to keep on track with a healthy eating regime is to maintain equilibrium between wellbeing and a tasty palate. A rigid and bland eating pattern will backfire, especially when dealing with children.

Sugar intake, portion control and whole grain were central topics discussed and explained during the events. The nutritionist present during these events also made reference to the importance of including a variety of foods in our diet to ensure we are taking all the nutrients the body requires. Fruit and vegetables play an important role although not exclusively, since these alone do not contain all the nutrients the body needs. Moreover, whole grain cereals contain an extra dose of vitamins, minerals and fibre which is key to good intestinal health, lower cholesterol levels, satiety and higher concentration and energy levels. All cereals offered during these breakfast events contained whole grain.

So as long as our options are well calculated and we refrain from calorie-dense breakfasts which elicit lethargy and health problems, we are entitled to dive into a bowl of goodness and health every morning!
