1,475 migrant arrivals, 319 repatriations, by end September
A total of 1,475 migrants arrived illegally between January and September this year, while the number of repatriations during the same period reached 319. Repatriations totalled 260 in the whole of last year and 338 in 2007.
Justice and Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said this year's arrivals included 898 Somalis, by far the biggest group. They were followed by 156 from Eritrea.
The minister also said that in the past five years, 89 migrants who had arrived in Malta illegally were subsequently found in other countries of the European Union. Sixteen were sent back to Malta.

@ D Catania: You have still not addressed the issue. We certainly both agree that we've had more than enough of illigal immigrants and that something should be done. Now my question to you is: Tell me what should be done? The PM of Malta is doing what is democratically legal and within our power. If you have an idea of how we can still act within domocracitic ways and get us rid of all illegal immigrants here, or even stop them in a legal manner, than go ahead and share it. That's all. It's you asking Gonzi to wake up which is out of tune on the matter. Gonzi is well up, and he's so awake that he's not prepared to put Malta at risk of beinig isolated by acting stupidly and bring the whole world looking down on us for acting stupidly.

@Mary Ann Borg: Muscat is not the prime minister. It's Gonzi's job to act. If we have to wait till 2013 to fix this problem, Malta will be in trouble. If what you claim is right, that Gonzi is tired. He should resign. This is not a PL or PN issue as you are trying to make it. This is a national issue and the present government is the one that can veto and vote no on certain issue at the EU level. Gonzi should use OUR veto power in the EU, which by the way is the only power Malta has. You don't think 5 or 6 MEP's can do anything for Malta. Gonzi did get tough there for a MINUTE this past summer, when he mentioned he is going to re-fuel the ILLEGAL immigrants and give them crackers and water and let them go on with their voyage (Do you remember that?) Maybe you are right he is tired. Please don't talk to me like if I'm protecting a certain political party. Just because I'm trying to protect Malta, doesn't make me a member and or supporter of the opposition. Wake up and smell the coffee.

@ Mary Anne Borg.
No one ever mentioned shooting anyone down but we have the right not to allow this invasion. Since you seem to be well informed can you please answer these questions?
Why are we accepting Nigerians, Kenyans, Maroccans, Egytians etc?
What are these illegal immigrants supposed to do since they cannot travel to Europe or anywhere else?
How many can we take before the system is overloaded?
Whois going to feed them in 10, 20 years time when our own wellfare system is no longer sustainabe?
What are they costing us now? Please include there medical expenses.
What exactly are they entitled for?
Thanks

That, nice for burden sharing the Polish already got out of it in a way may be good so our Prime Minister wake up from his dream that,s what we took from the EU ,so if a boat load after boat start comeing we will be over taken and the Prime Minister start to take our property to house them too, unless they don,t start to sending them back from where they come from straight away they keep comeing they must send the massage to them that if go to Malta they send us back so we don't go there and if the EU say that wrong than they can take them or else issue them with a passport so they can go wherever they like and then we see what the EU will say we are doomed because our politicians have no guts to stand for there country. We should start going to church to pray may be God will give us a good leader who have the gust to save us from this invasion for the sake of our children and their children.

@Muscat Pat & Denis Catania: You are simply not addressing the issue. What I'm asking you to do is to ask Muscat what he plans doing with the illegal immigrants should they ask for assistance. For Muscat to be credible he must spit out precisely his plans, not just 'iparla ghall gallerija'. I ask you both to tell me specifically what is Muscat suggesting to stop the influx of illegal immigrants. Go on now, I'll wait.
I have no doubt that the huge majority of the Maltese population is totally fed up with the number of illegal immigrants here. We are also all disappointed with this 'solidarity' move by EU states that while commendable by some, is non-existant by others. The only honest support we are getting is from the United States that has repeatedly taken migrants away from us and plans to continue doing so. I suspect the US alone has taken more immigrants than the rest of the 26 countries in the EU put together.
It's not Gonzi that needs to wake up (altough he may be a tad tired after having beaten Lejber again) but Muscat that needs to stop trying to fool people with impossible promises.

Although a little better than last year, these numbers need to be reversed ASAP as DVella said. Wake up Gonzi it's you and the Maltese all alone. You won't be getting help from outsiders, especially from the blue eyed boys up north.

@ Mary Anne Borg.
The problem with illegal immigration lies with GonziPN because he is the Prime Minister. Joseph Muscat issued 15 points on illegal immigration before the MEP elections, and the PN spokeman Simon Busuttil trumpeted that he-{from Brussell}s- had already solved- single handed the problem of illegal immigration! If Dr Gonzi cannot persuade his MP.s namely, Pullicino Orland, Arrigo, Debono, and Dalli to show solidarity and unity with him, how do we expect Gonzi to persuade the foreign leaders to show solidarity with Malta?

Whatever he does it would be better then voluntary burden sharing, which is considered by Simon Busuttil himself as a JOKE.

What are Dr Gonzi and Dr Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici doing to make sure that repatriations proceed at a higher rate than arrivals, so that the accumulated total of illegal immigrants that are roaming the streets of Malta starts to go down? Are they waiting for the permission of JRS?

Send them all back.No one is going to help us.The un helps its self and its employees. All of them on huge salaries. We have to help ourselves. Repartiate the illegals be they Africans, Russians and other nationalities. Dr Gonzi its up to you. We are being taken for a ride.

I personally would like to know the nationality of the migrants that were repatriated, cause as meager as the 319 figure is I doubt that they were all ‘boat people’.
Anyway we can all see what a huge discrepancy there is between the number of illegal migrants arriving and the number of those we manage to repatriate. Now it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out what this nation will be dealing with in a decade from now if nothing factual is done to seriously tackle this problem once and for all.

@Mike Farrugia: Making statements is easy, implementing them is slightly different. Now that Muscat has made this 'important statement' how about telling us exactly how he plans to put his words in action? Does he plan to tell our armed forces to shoot at them before they get to Malta? Does he plan to refuel their boats and send them packing? Does he plan to ignore their plight for assistance and just let them drown? It is well known that illegal immigrants have no intention to land in Malta and they only do so when they run into trouble as they are making their way up north. So if they ask for assistance, Malta has an obligation to assist them and bring them in. What exactly is this 'important statement' all about then? Muscat was also reported as having said some few months ago that Malta should declare a quota. Tonio Borg replied by asking him what will Muscat do with the illegal immigrants that arrive after the quota has been reached. Have you heard Muscat's reply? Of course you haven't because he doesn't have an answer to it, so his 'important statements' are less than hollow suggestions.

Yesterday, Joseph Muscat made a very important statement on ONE TV. He said that he thinks that irregular migrants should be stopped from proceeding towards Maltese shores.
What is the government waiting for? Why not take advantage of the consensus being offered and save your face?

Is Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici happy with these figures? He should start taking repatriation seriously and send at least 100 illegal immigrants back to their own country every week.

Now you have hit right on the roots of our problems. Not just cushy jobs I might add, but paying hundreds of thousands of Euros a year plus expense accounts.

The figures show a balance of 1,156 irregular ( illegal) migrants added to our burden, which is already onerous enough. Would the E.U. Commission expect Malta to give these 'migrants citizen rights in six months' time, irrespective of whether their case has been adequately investigated or not ?.
In my opinion, the Commission's proposal for a peremptory month limit for investigation of each case is too short and needs too be qualified by a general E,U, acceptance of compulsory burden sharing.

Malta has been sold out by politicians in Malta and Brussels in return for guaranteed cushy jobs for them and their cohorts.
