Thirteen local councils have been granted €90,000 to draw up plans to improve rural sustainable development in their area.

The Majjistral action group set off a consultation process with the councils in the north of Malta, which eventually will open a door to around €4 million in EU-funded projects.

The consultation process was launched by Public Dialogue Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said.

Leading the Majjistral group is Lija mayor Ian Castaldi Paris who will have to draw up a strategy report listing projects for the localities by December.

This strategy will be based on the feedback and suggestions put forward by small businesses, tourism operators, farmer organisations, environmental groups and residents.

The funds come from the Leader EU programme which focuses on improving the development of rural areas with the collaboration of the private and public sector.

The action groups, Majjistral, Gozo and Xlokk, cover all Malta and Gozo and each have €90,000 to draw up three strategy reports by the end of the year. These reports will then be submitted to the EU and act as the foundation for the €4 million which will be used to implement the projects over three years.

The consultation process in Gozo finished on Tuesday while the Xlokk group is half-way through.

The local councils in the Majjistral action group are Lija, Mġarr, Mellieħa, Għargħur, Rabat, Dingli, Mtarfa, St Paul's Bay, Siġġiewi, Naxxar, Iklin, Attard and Mdina.
