An elderly pedestrian was in critical condition for a while yesterday after being run over in rush hour traffic in Floriana.
It is understood that the Englishman, 65, who lives in Għargħur, was crossing the road at the traffic lights next to the lion fountain in St Anne Street at about 8.30 a.m.
He was a hit by a Citroen AX driven by a 45-year-old from Valletta.
Eyewitness said the car's windscreen was shattered inwards and its bonnet heavily dented on impact.
They said a man immediately ran out of a nearby van and administered first aid.
The police said the Englishman was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was found to be critically injured and operated on shortly after. His condition is now stable.
The driver was treated for shock.
