In just two years, the cost of electricity and water consumed at Mater Dei Hospital has topped €8.2 million, the Social Policy Minister told Parliament this week. The hospital, which consumes 10MW of energy more than its predecessor St Luke's, racked up an electricity bill of €7.6 million and a water bill of almost €700,000 since the first patients were admitted in 2007.

The minister said there was a pending utility bill of just over €800,000 .

The new hospital started taking in patients towards the end of 2007 after its completion in June that year.
