For the second year running, General Soft Drinks Co. Ltd is promoting the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle through its brand Powerade, and the support of nutrition and physical fitness education programmes with children.
Last year, the Powerade Malta Fit For Future Cup consisted of an interactive journey and an educational project based on maintaining an active lifestyle; a programme aimed to involve students from different age groups and numerous schools, both at physical and academic levels.
This year, Powerade teamed up with the Melita FC nursery to organise a specialised training programme for children aged between 10 and 13.
The programme, held between August and September, was supervised by coach Marko Glumac. The aim of the academy was to hone the skills of the 36 participating children.
Besides on-pitch training, the children were also given lectures by professional coaches, officials as well as high-profile players such as Valletta's Jordi Cruyff.
Topics covered included the history of the game, sports-related injuries, in-game tactics and game analysis. A qualified nutritionist also gave tips on how to lead an active lifestyle and follow a healthy diet.
At the end of the training programme, the participants were divided into six groups and each group was required to prepare a project about healthy nutrition and active lifestyle.
These projects were presented by the children to their parents in a presentation held recently at the Le Meridien Hotel, St Julian's.
At the end of the presentation, each participant was presented with a goody bag which consisted of Powerade Merchandise, a certificate of participation from the Melita Football Academy and useful literature about Active Lifestyles and Living provided by The Coca-Cola Company, Europe.
