During a competition held last weekend at the Cottonera Sports Complex, Manwel Schembri broke a national record that had stood for 13 years.

Schembri, 23, lifted 153 kgs overhead in the clean and jerk in the heaviest category. The Maltese weightlifter has now set his sights on qualifying for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be staged in India.

Last weekend, Schembri hoisted a total of 263kgs, only seven kilogrammes short of the benchmark set by the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) to book a place in the Commonwealth Games.

In light of his current form, Schembri is confident about reaching and possibly surpassing this standard over the next few months.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Malta Weightlifting Federation will hold its annual general meeting at Newman's Bar, Sliema, starting at 15.00.
