A 65-year-old Briton resident in Gharghur was seriously injured when he was knocked down by a car in St Anne Street, Floriana this morning.

The incident happened at about 8.15 a.m. when the man was crossing the busy road near the Lion fountain. He was hit by a red Citroen driven by a 45-year-old man from Valletta.

Other drivers and passers-by gave assistance until an ambulance arrived - in eight minutes.

The man, who suffered head injuries and arm and leg fractures, is being treated in hospital. The driver was also treated for shock.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani is holding an inquiry.
