Jail for smuggling drugs in stomach

A Nigerian who imported drugs by swallowing 19 capsules of cocaine with a street value of more than €20,000 was yesterday jailed for 10 years and fined €20,000.

Davidson Osiri, 34, was arrested in a hotel in Qawra in August last year after the police were tipped off about his arrival.

Mr Osiri had arrived from Spain after conspiring with another individual to start importing the drugs into Malta, the Attorney General had stated in the bill of indictment.

The police managed to apprehend Mr Osiri before the drugs were delivered.

Mr Osiri had pleaded guilty to conspiring to import and traffic drugs.

Lawyer Malcolm Mifsud appeared for Mr Osiri.
