Matthew Paris, KSU vice-president
"The student maintenance grant and other government initiatives to assist students with their expenses, ranging from textbooks to courseware, should help increase the number of Maltese graduates so that, hopefully, we reach the same level as in EU states.
"However, this must be coupled by a labour market which can absorb the newly graduates. Otherwise, Malta will have a brain drain, as happened in previous years.
"To supplement their income, many students opt to take up a part-time job to retain certain luxuries, such as, travel, expensive clothes, cars, etc."
Francesco Catania, LL.B. 3rd year
"The maintenance grant significantly helps me to gain access to various information sources for my studies, including books, coursework material and IT, including the internet."
Jean-Claude Dimech, BA History and Sociology
"The maintenance grant is a precious concession that students should cherish and make wise use of. I have been able to fund countless photocopies of books that were crucial to conduct research for many assignments, and to buy stationary.
"Besides these academic necessities, it enabled me to engage in sports activities, mainly Dancesport.
"I would not be able to fulfil my academic and career potential if I had to squeeze in a part-time job at the same time, but that's another story."
Alan Borg, B.Sc. IS and Man., 5th year, University of London
"The myPotential scheme gave me the opportunity to reimburse part of the study expenses, which could amount to thousands of euro.
"In addition, the scheme encouraged many people to further their studies and hopefully improve their career.
"I hope such schemes continue and keep on encouraging all those interested in furthering their knowledge."
Ibtisam Sadegh, LL.B. 3rd year
"The grant and scheme would enable to reduce my working hours and dedicate more time to my studies. It would also be able to buy petrol to come to university."
