Dingli Swallows sprung a surprise this afternoon when they defeated Floriana 2-1 to gain their first ever win in the top flight.

Dingli opened the scoring close to the half hour mark. Shaun Tellus’s header from a Clint Caruana corner triggered a goalmouth melee and Nigerian striker Joseph Okonkwo profited by firing the ball home from routine distance.

Floriana took just three minutes to level matters. Racing on to a pass from Joseph Borg, Sunday-Akanni Wasiu sped clear, rounded Dingli goalkeeper Jeffrey Farrugia and fired home.

The Greens dictated matters for most of the second half but they could not find a second goal.

Jeffrey Farrugia, the Dingli goalkeeper, made a fine save to parry Orosco Anonam’s shot and Wasiu hit wide from outside the box.

Dingli punished Floriana’s failure to take their chances when, with 10 minutes left, Okonkwo pounced on an error by Brian Said, who was making his debut for the Greens, and clipped the ball past Bernard Paris.

Okonkwo was voted player of the match.
