Marsa council protests over sewage rivers
The Marsa council yesterday called on Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt to provide a solution to the river of sewage that flows every time there is heavy rainfall.
"We are still waiting for a serious reply from the minister," the mayor said in reaction to Dr Gatt's statement in Parliament last week that placed the blame for the sewage outflow on residents' shoulders.
In reply to a parliamentary question from Labour MP Gino Cauchi, Dr Gatt said he was aware of the sewage problems regularly faced by the residents of Triq is-Sajjieda.
But the Infrastructure Minister said the problem was being caused because drains had been connected illegally to the sewage network. When heavy rains struck, the system could not cope with the amount of water drained into it, causing the sewage to spill out into the roads, he said.
His reply drew about a sharp reaction from Marsa mayor Francis Debono, who said the minister's words were "more of an excuse than a reply".
He urged the government to come up with a solution to the problem in order to protect public health.
But according to the minister, the solution lies in a broader plan by the Water Services Corporation to eliminate problems. The first phase is the enlargement of the Marsa pumping station which had already begun, Dr Gatt said.

THere is still a stone obstruction housing the SEWAGE overflow right before the floodwater tunnel which is deflecting and slowing the floodwater. This exists just before the Millennia tunnel which is supported with 48 columns which have now been joined by galvanised steel plates to avoid debris fouling as occurred in september 2003. This SEWAGE stone pile, is causing one of the four tunnels under Aldo Moro Road from the Marsa sport ground (MILLENNIA Whereabouts) to circulate and reverse the flow rather than translate it to sea.
There was another SEWAGE obstruction in the Millenia Hole which reduced the width of the flooodwater channel from 26 metres at the Lowenbrau Brewery to 4.8 metres at this drainage obstruction (2003)which thank God now has been removed. But at this locality there is still much to do to improve the drainage of SEWAGE and FLOODWATER.
But please take heed, Qormi and Marsa are still vulnurable due to the what was said above and also the 12 columns under Albert Town Bridge which are constantly being fouled with debris and sewage. This site needs some top brains to solve the Floodwater and Sewage bottlenecks which has been existing for too longDueToBad Design.
