Żurrieq quarry application rejected
A request to build a quarry in Wied Moqbol, Żurrieq, next to a protected nature site, has been rejected by the planning authority appeals' board.
The request for a full development permit, filed in 2005, had been recommended for acceptance by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority's planning directorate.
But the Mepa board turned it down on the ground that under planning policies, no permits for quarries were to be issued for the time being.
The developer took the case before the Development Control Commission but it was refused again.
He then filed an appeal.
A number of environmental organisations had opposed the proposed development in the special area of conservation.

This very good news for us residents of Zurrieq. Quarrying, except for limestone blocks (tal-franka) should be totally abolished from this land. Haven't enough wounds been inflicted on our landscape by the continuous quarrying of rock for producing low quality sand and gravel? All building materials should be imported since rock in Malta is a very finite commodity. We do not have granite mountains, we do not have the real material for making gravel and sand for construction, Our concrete quality is inferior to international standards. Furthermore, the explosive method of blasting in quarries is causing a lot of hardship to the residents in their vicinity. I appeal to the authories concerned especially the Malta Resources Authority, to establish rules and carry out surprise inspections on the methods used for blasting rock faces. I know for sure, that the Nigret area of Zurrieq is experiencing earthquake-like tremors on a weekly basis causing damage to buildings. This is true and I can verify it to the authorities.
