Poverty campaign in Sliema
SOS Malta is planning to highlight the plight of poor people in Sliema today to mark World Poverty Day.
The awareness campaign at the Plaza Shopping Centre will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will hone in on poverty and the Millennium Development Goals.
This campaign forms part of a larger initiative undertaken by SOS Malta under two development projects - the Media Engagement in Development Issues and Promotion, and Save Women's Lives - funded by the European Commission.

A commendable exercise. But the "poor" are not to be found only in Sliema. The minimum of 21% of pensioners at risk (last data provided was for 2007) are found everywhere. Those of them who are in the habit of eating to stay alive, are in increasingly dire straits when a visit to a supermarket becomes dearer every passing week.

Indeed much more must be done by the government to improve the standard of living of the poor people in Sliema.
Lots of holiday makers who spent their vacations at comfortable hotels in Sliema are aware of the difficulties poor people in Sliema have to cope with.
First of all conditions for the elderly must be improved.
I personally know some elderly in Sliema and often i learnt from them about their problems (lack of sufficient money, loneliness, lack of psychological help).
Without the help fo The Catholic Church the misery of old people would be larger. The church offers so much for the old.
I would like to express my gratidude to the Catholic Church and encourage it - do more for the elderly- they worked their whole life and the society is responsible to offer them what they need.
