BNP to consider admitting non-whites
The far-right British National Party (BNP) agreed today to ask its members to amend its constitution to allow non-whites to join, in a bid to fend off court action from equality campaigners.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission launched legal action against the BNP earlier this year, arguing the party's exclusion of potential members on ethnic grounds broke the Race Relations Act.
BNP leader Nick Griffin had warned the party faced potentially crippling legal bills if it fought the case, and the commission said he had now accepted its demands to change the party's stance on membership.
Under an order issued at Central London Court, the BNP agreed "to use all reasonable endeavours to revise its constitution so that it does not discriminate ... on any 'protected characteristic' -- for example on the grounds of race, ethnic or religious status."
"We are pleased that the party has conceded this case and agreed to all of the commission's requirements," said John Wadham, the commission's legal director.
"Political parties, like any other organisation, are obliged to respect the law and not discriminate against people."
The BNP, which campaigns for a halt to immigration, voluntary repatriation of immigrants and Britain's withdrawal from the European Union, has no seats at Westminster.
However its popularity has grown in recent years and it now boasts a number of local councillors and in June enjoyed its greatest electoral success when it won two seats to the European Parliament.
"We have got to comply if we want to stay in the game," a BNP spokesman told the BBC.
"Of course it's not right," he said of the court case. "It's an infringement of our rights."

I think that Mr.Balzan is right in saying Heaven on earth by all account the majority of the ex-pats sooner or later end up back home in their country of birth and i can endorse this because Malta and Gozo have a safe environment and a healthy way to bring up our children. Many guests or foreigners have taken residency here for the very same reason and who can blame them, can't be all that bad here really, we moan about this and that but then again who doesn't. I also think what Mr. balzan ment by payback time without making a big issue out it or sounding somber, i think he ment after the bad times he must have had in the UK, that now its time for him to live normally as a Maltese and enjoy himself, unless some bloggers have a different view and interpretation which is below one's inteligence.Mr.Lee to hear that your better half or is it your goodself being over charged by our local shops, if an individual knows is being taken for a ride why not query the price charged at the time? I do. Try a day trip to Sicily. Bye.

There are pockets in the UK where there is discrimination and concern about anything foreign, not just because one is Maltese, mediterrenean or whatever. This is normal and natural in every country in the world. Just as there are pockets where they feel that they are foreigners in their own country.
As for the subject, this law suit against the BNP is unwarranted for, unnatural, childish, and can backlash on those people who thinks that they can destroy the BNP from within, or any party broadly based on defending identity.
So such people should be allowed in, but they have to publicly talk along party lines. Else they should be thrown out on ideological basis. Parties are not commercial companies, and they can discriminate on beliefs. Having such people talking against migration, what else the BNP needs?

I am a Maltese Australian, and this is not only my point of view but also from the majority of the Aussies themselves at my work place, anyhow as i say, the problem is with you guys as per your comment is that a lot of your nation like to dish is out but **can't take the back lash**., some how don't think Mr. Balzan is threatening anyone he is free to comment Malta is a free and a democratic country, don't know about yours, so he is just expressing his opinion and i daresay many of us Maltese citizens who suffer racial abuse from host countries and its a fact, whether you are overcharged or not that's up to you pal not my problem, you got a mouth haven't you, well you proved it by your feedback, as they say what goes around comes around. End of story. Enjoy your stay in my country and of my forefathers, i'm sure you find it alot safer to walk the streets of London(title from a song) then yours. G'day from Blacktown just outside SYDNEY- NSW OF FANTASTIC AUSTRALIA.

What sad comments by Mr Balzan what is he doing in England if things are so bad for him surely by now he should have got on the first plane back to Malta. I am sure the British Residents here are going to run scared as soon as he arrives for as he put it payback time! I wonder for how long he actually has suffered this so called discrimination in UK; one does always has a choice when he elects to live in another Country. Unfortunately reality is that wherever you live there is good and bad, as Mr Lee said live is not a bowl of cherries here but it is nice and warm. Discrimination is an integral part of Malta my wife is British and often gets caught in shopkeeper’s pastime of being overcharged. For the record I lived in the UK for forty years during which time I held a professional job I never tried to be different or expect to be treated differently although I retained my Maltese Nationality. Now retired in Malta I can look back with pride with what I achieved in England.

Shall i take that as a threat Mr Balzan? The Maltese are no better than anyone when it comes to discrimination so please cut out the holier than you are. I have also been treated differently in Malta, being English i am charged more in the shops than the Maltese and am refused a loan at the bank because i am a foreigner although my wife and child are Maltese. The weather is great though, so i will be staying but looking over my shoulder for the likes of you.

I spent a few years living in England and I also experienced discrimination because of the way I look. I'm not exactly blond but I'm not black either and I was treated very differently by some English. I notice that when they are over here they act very different than the way they act at home. and sometimes I feel that some Maltese people don't realise that. I can understand very well what R. Balzan is going through.

Don't trust them, does this include our Maltese citiziens who are unfortunate enough to live and work in Britian, many a times i was discriminated against just because i have a healthy Gozitan/Maltese suntan, and i am not the only citizen of Malta to have experienced such uncivilized treatment by some of the English., I live in Manchester hopefully not for long, Malta here i come and it will be payback time.
