North Queensland Fury have denied Robbie Fowler has been the subject of an approach by managerless League One side Tranmere.

Rovers parted company with manager John Barnes last week and reports over the weekend suggested the club had approached 34-year-old Fowler with a view to the former Liverpool and England striker becoming their new player-manager.

Fowler, the Fury's 'marquee' player, has found his goalscoring touch of late with four goals in six games, but his club insist there has been no approach for his services.

Fowler has a two-year contract with the Fury.

No Zenit deal for Pavlyuchenko

Roman Pavlyuchenko's agent Oleg Artemov insists reports in Russia that his client has already signed a contract with Zenit St Petersburg are premature.

The club are interested in signing the former Spartak Moscow striker this winter, but they could face competition from Milan.

Fulham have also been linked with a move for the out-of-favour Tottenham striker.

Pavlyuchenko is currently on international duty with Russia but is struggling to shake off a cold.

The 27-year-old has played less than 30 minutes of Premier League football for Tottenham this season.

Alex committed to Chelsea

Brazilian defender Alex became the second Chelsea player to sign a new contract in as many days this week as the Blues look to tie their star names to the club.

Alex followed winger Salomon Kalou in committing his future to the club when he signed a four-year deal to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2013.

Chelsea are determined to sign up as many of their key players on fresh deals following FIFA's transfer ban.

Alex, who is returning to fitness after groin surgery in the summer, has joined Kalou, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba and Michael Mancienne in signing new deals, while Joe Cole is also expected to soon put pen to paper.

Domenech hints at Trez olive branch

France coach Raymond Domenech welcomed David Trezeguet's comments about wanting to return to the national set-up.

Trezeguet, 31, announced his retirement from international football after being left out of Domenech's squad for Euro 2008, but recently said he would like to be involved in November's World Cup play-off.

"I like it when players say that they want to play, to hear that players need the French team and want to play for it," Domenech said.

Captain Thierry Henry said: "David was injured last year. David is David. You could put him in any team at the age of 60 and if there were any chances they would fall to him."

Maicon happy insist Inter

Inter have denied any contract disputes with Brazilian full-back Maicon.

Comments attributed to Maicon's agent, Antonio Caliendo, claimed the player was unhappy after the club failed to fulfil their promise of a pay increase.

But a statement from Inter read: "Technical director Marco Branca reiterates 'the maximum conviction and satisfaction with the current contractual situation, both on our part and on the part of the player'."

Maicon joined Inter from Monaco in 2006 and has become a key player for coach Jose Mourinho.

The Brazil international was a target of Real Madrid this summer but Inter were reluctant to sell him.

Maicon is under contract at Inter until June 2013.

Players threatened by angry fans

River Plate players received threatening phone calls this week from fans fed up with their poor performances in the Argentine first division.

A humiliating 3-1 defeat at home to Independiente on Monday left River in 16th place in the championship with five points from eight matches.

It was the first time in 13 years that River had lost at home to Independiente, and 11th overall in one of the Argentine game's big 'classics'.

Players cancelled their mobile phone contracts and refused to talk to reporters suspecting they had passed the numbers to the fans who made the calls, media said.

Cahill the hero for Socceroos

Tim Cahill once again proved Australia's saviour by scoring the winner against Oman to put the Socceroos on top of their Asian Cup qualifying group on Wednesday.

Oman looked set to frustrate the host team of European stars before the Everton midfielder rifled home the winner 16 minutes from time. It was Cahill's 19th goal in 36 internationals.

Victory hoisted Australia to the top of Group B with a crucial three points after their scratchy start to qualifying for the 2011 tournament in Qatar.

The Aussies had put themselves in trouble when a below-strength side was upset 1-0 by Kuwait in Canberra in March after drawing 0-0 with Indonesia in Jakarta last January.
