6,000 litres of contraband diesel found
Six plastic tanks each containing 1,000 litres of diesel were found on a truck in Marsaxlokk by Customs officials in the early hours of this morning.
The Customs Department said in a statement that the driver told them the diesel had been unloaded from a vessel berthed in Delimara.
The truck was sealed and is being kept at Customs and investigations are being carried out on the vessel.
The department said it has been observing and investigating several localities in Malta and Gozo for the past weeks in its fight against contraband diesel. It retained a bowser containing contraband diesel a month ago.
The police are investigating both cases.

@ george debono
Nothing could be worse than the fuel imported by enemalta... when will we finally see petrol stations who give us choice of what brand of fuel to buy? :/ Tis is the norm in other countries but here the government chooses to import whichever is the cheapest in price and worst in quality..

It's amazing how nobody seems particularly concerned.
This could easily be cheap inferior fuel which can be polluting to the air we breathe.
But then, who cares about pollution...

Well, they won't be able to sell it to the bus drivers. They aren't interested in 'real' fuel. It doesn't make enough smoke!

Probably this diesel is of better quality than what we buy from the pumps. We all know that the quality of diesel that we get is very poor and we pay a lot for it!

@Ernest Vella - Are you serious? Can't you understand the difference between contraband and cheaper fuel?
These guys are obviously getting the fuel from similar sources to the government. The difference is they are not paying duty on it! If the government buys it from the same source the price to us will still end up being the same due to the duty!

Exactly Ernest Vella.
Isn't it a free market? Or is it not?
Does fuel have the same type of duty imposed on it like cigarettes? Hence qualifying this fuel as 'contraband' since duty was not paid?
IF yes... why is there duty on diesel which is a commercial necessity? Remove duty and let the economy breathe!

Contraband diesel....I cannot associate it with contraband....if they bought it less from elsewere why worrying all about....the goverment must buy from there to so that the diesel price will reduce....and also electricity bills will be less....or the goverment is saying the diesel price for the sake to have a piece of that money....can someone explain? This is a very strange news.
