Czech President Vaclav Klaus is receiving 27 EU pens along with letters asking him to sign the Lisbon Treaty.
The pens are being sent by the Young European Federalists (JEF) in all member states, including JEF Malta. Malta's letter is being sent in Maltese, English and Czech.
Vice President of the federalist organisation and co-ordinator of the YES2LISBON campaign Toni Giugliano said:
“Through this action we ask President Klaus to respect the will of the federal youths. This action is being done in the light of the Lisbon Treaty, in the view of creating a better Europe which will be more democratic and transparent.
“The Lisbon Treaty is essential to avoid the EU from further slowing its integration process. There’s not just the sixth European Parliament seat at stake for Malta if President Klaus doesn’t sign the Treaty. We need to move on as a Union and Lisbon is the way forward.
“Europe has been held back long enough. Klaus is simply finding ways of holding it back further.
“First he chooses to wait for Ireland’s referendum result. Then he completely ignores the Irish shout for change in Europe. Now he is even ignoring the will of both houses of the Czech parliament, causing the Czech cabinet to meet in emergency sessions,” he said.
