Society suffering for neglecting Sunday - Gozo bishop
Gozo Bishop Mario Grech believes society and families are paying a high price for not respecting Sunday as a day of rest.
"We've been robbed of the day of the Lord. The consciousness of many is so dormant we have not realised that Sunday has been taken away from us; Sunday is the synthesis of Christian life," he said.
This was the message by Mgr Grech, which was read out in all the churches across Gozo on Sunday to mark the beginning of the Diocesan Eucharistic Congress. It commemorates the first congress that took place in Gozo in 1929.
It was a fact, he said, that the "Eucharistic cult" pushed the congregation to embrace the common good over that of the individual. Without the Eucharist, the Christian community would die out.
The congress was intended as a time for reflection, to cherish Sunday as a special day and help society revise the way it lived this day.

God in His wisdom commanded time-out once a week, one out of seven days to think of our soul as well as our mind and body. This benefits all, not just Christians. But we're so emancipated that we believe we know better, sadly.

That's so strange. I remember... somewhere... no, repeatedly... in the Bible, various prophets, writers, and even God Himself saying that the day of rest was to be the Sabbath day. Oh, yes, that's the Fourth Commandment too, isn't it? Number 4 out of 10, it must be important...
Jesus never changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and to the contrary reinforced it's position of importance in the future - "heaven and earth will pass away before the least letter or stroke of a letter", and "pray that your flight not be on the Sabbath day", etc...
So if the church replaced what had been commanded, it shouldn't be too worried when it's replacement is itself replaced.

With all due respect Bishop, the reason most people work on Sunday is because they are trying to make ends meet. To a lot of people, it's a matter of survival in these hard times. Most people working on Sundays are trying to put food on the table for their families. I am sure everybody would like to take Sunday off but not everybody can afford that luxury.

I thoroughly agree, we have been robbed and many do not respect Sunday as a day of rest.
How about no more construction noise (hammering, stone cutting, drilling etc) on a Sunday (both private and commercial); engine repairs consisting of running up engines to high revs Petards, over loud music from cars and carcades. It would also be nice if certain hawkers could at least reduce the use of their horns on a Sunday - there is one in particular that visits the Qawra area who has no idea of moderation on any day of the week.
