'Revolting' torture ordeal
A man was charged with sadistically beating and threatening to burn a victim he had doused with petrol in an 11-hour torture spree.
Few details of the horrifying ordeal emerged during a court hearing yesterday but Magistrate Lawrence Quintano said the torture described to him by the prosecuting officer was "revolting".
Police sources said the accused, 33-year-old Vincent Attard of Valletta, allegedly beat his victim on the head with a wooden bar, tied him to a chair and doused him with petrol before he started waiving a lighter close to his face, threatening that he would burn him to death.
Eventually, the victim, Carmel Muscat, was untied and set free, which is when he went to report the ordeal to the police.
More disturbing details are expected to emerge later in the proceedings, the sources said.
The torture allegedly took place in an apartment belonging to the accused in Republic Street, Valletta.
The beating is believed to have been connected to a dispute over drugs.
Mr Attard was denied bail.
Lawyers Josè Herrera and Veronique Dalli appeared for the accused.

If found guilty a person like this should be separated from society for good. If not then what use do prisons have? Prisons must have 3 functions 1) Punish 2) Rehabilitate 3) Separate dangerous individuals from the rest of us. We removed the death penalty, at least let's hand out some serious prison sentences, something which is not happening right now.

Religious values have absolutely nothing to do with the case.
What this man did was despicable, what catholics used to do during the inquisition is no better. What muslims do to infidels is no better either. I could go on and on. Have you any proof that this man is atheist?
At least we should be thankful that he set the victim free.
Let's hope justice is served and he pays for what he did.

Quote 1: "... allegedly beat his victim on the head with a wooden bar"
Quote 2: "Eventually, the victim, Carmel Muscat, was untied and set free, which is when he went to report the ordeal to the police."
Quotes 1 normally excludes Quote 2. How can a victim who suffered head injuries from a criminal with a wooden bar be capable to make a report afterwards?

This is a confirmation of the fact that most of us have lost not only the moral/religious values, but also the human values.
We have been hearing of persons ill-treating - to put it mildly - their "loving" pets and other animals. Understandably many have shown their anger through comments, some of which suggesting extreme measures against the culprits, which no court in a democratic country would impose.
Whilst I empathise with those who suggested extreme measures, recently we have been hearing of human brutality, - the cruel way a young man was murdered in St. Paul's Bay, and now this horrible case.
To make it worse allegationsare being made that uniformed personnel who are duty bound to defend the rights of civilians, are themselves 'loosing it' and using brutal force when carrying out their "duties" .
Thank God these are the miniority. I hope that proper investigations are held, and if confirmed severe action is taken against these culprits. Those found guilty must keep in mind that they are denting their own Corps, whilst through their irresponsible actions, are inducing certain persons to emulate them.
