Assistance to mitigate the effects of the recession was requested by 27 companies operating in Malta, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said.

He told Labour MP Carmelo Abela in reply to a parliamentary question that the request of 10 companies was accepted but two decided not to take up the help offered. Discussions were ongoing with another six companies and three have closed since their request for help.

The other eight companies did not satisfy the necessary criteria to make them eligible for assistance.
