Wine bar stabbing - man arrested
A man has been arrested following the stabbing of a 29-year-old wine bar owner in Sliema.
David Darmanin, who is also a journalist with Malta Today, was grievously injured in the attack in the early hours of this morning in his wine bar in High Street. He was found in a pool of blood in the street and was rushed to hospital where his condition has now stabilised. He is, however, still in a critical condition.
Sources said the attack was not linked to his journalistic work.
The arrested man, from Attard, is due to be arraigned this evening or tomorrow.

First of all: Get well soon David!!!! such a shame you had to go through this!
@Mike Jones ....you must be joking!! Carrying a weapon is AS bad as using it! are you seriously implying that insecure people should be allowed to carry weapons?? don't you know that carrying a weapon makes it easier to use one?? ....I am a young woman..I've travelled the largest cities on my own, I have felt insecure at times of course but I chose to be prudent, careful and most of all down-to-earth aware of the dangers around me but NEVER did I carry a weapon!!! In England we were given pepper spray at university to protect ourselves - that is surely not a weapon but is still ILLEGAL to carry around in Italy! So if pepper spray is still not allowed go figure a pointed weapon! C'mon!
And what bloody past are you referring to? The world has gone through the dark times (and still is)..but I recall it was worldwide and not simply Maltese!
Having said that, the latter goes out of topic, all I wanted was to leave my best wishes for David!

@I Abela
It's pathetic how a bunch of people are on a mission to chant the 'return to the 70's and 80's' mantra no matter what the news item. This poor young man lies fighting for his life and all they see is a banal opportunity to score cheap propaganda points no matter how disrespectful or irrelevant their comments may be. All the best to David and his family.

I am still shocked at this news. When you hear or read this sort of thing happening to someone you don't know, you kind of shrug it off and blame "this decaying society" or brand the victim a nasty piece of work who probably got what he deserved.
But I've known David for many years and I many will agree that he is the gentlest of souls.
Let's hope for a speedy recovery and for justice to be swiftly made.

CONTINUED>>>>>>>>>
When I mentioned third world countries it was never my intention of blaming anybody in particular for this incident and I thought I had made that quite clear.
However I am speaking from experience when I say we are now multi cultural and this in itself brings in good and bad habits. Unfortunately some of the minorities currently integrating within the Maltese culture have escaped from civil wars and genocide and until they arrived in our country they had to fight for their lives. The incident at Safi recently proves my point where the official comment was that it was down to tribal wars or words to that effect. Lo and behold I believe knives were used in that incident !!!
So please don't try and take advantage or twist my comments . I am not blaming anybody in particular. Just stating from my own experiences what will undoubtedly happen unless we put a stop to this knife madness or when one of your own family members falls victim to these criminals and becomes another unwanted murder statistic.
I wish David Darmanin a speedy recovery and hope his suffering will not be in vain.
Mario Tabone

Typical of some of you self rightous do gooders who have unlike myself and others faced a knife wielding criminal. If you care to read my comment I stated and just to make sure repeated that I was not pointing my finger at anybody in particular so @A Camilleri , I can assure you I was not making anybody a scapegoat.
@ Christine Xuereb, I can assure you as well that I am not blaming anybody from any ethnic minority and definately not saying that this is down to multi culturalism.
Rest assured that there are very few people who embrace multi culturalism like I do.
Last but not least @ Mike Jones. I sincerely hope that you are not advocating insecure people go about armed with knives or other weapons for self defense as your comment implies!!! Police State ? Grow up and thank the heavens above that you live in Malta. If one has nothing to hide one should not worry about being stopped and searched in the right circumstances. Nobody should have any reason to carry weapons for so called self defense.

"Forget about civil liberties rubbish" You betray yourself by giving unecessary powers to others. You'ew labeling your OWN liberties as "rubbish". What nonsense!
"Carrying a pointed instrument should carry a minimum 10 year sentence ". Are you saying an insecure individual who makes a mistake of carrrying a weapon for self defence fear should go to jail for 10 years? Again, nonsense!
"Stop and search"/ Police state should be done away with not encouraged!
"inheriting some of the bad customs", are you kidding me? Have you forgotten Malta's traditional bloody past?
The USE of a weapon in any circumstance should be dealt with heavy handedly. It is CRIMINALS who should be punished, not individuals that we imagine would be criminals. Weapon bearers are not criminals weapon (ab)users are.

There seems to be more and more violent crime in Malta, with criminals carrying guns and knives, muggings, robbery with violence, armed robbery etc.
Well the reason is the weak use of the law to stop violent crimes in Malta.
In Malta the focus it is all about re-habilitating these thugs, when it should be about locking them away for years, and helping protect the victims.
Too many suspended sentences and too much sympathy for the criminals instead of the victims. Try being nice to someone waving a knife or a gun in your face - the criminals have the power, the public get the pain, and the lawyers get the money.

Total, univocal condemnation of this cowardly attack and full support to David Darmanin and his family, friends and colleagues in these difficult moments. We who have been through our own difficult times when my property, my Radio station and my car were arsoned ten years ago offer David the sympathy and solidarity that , sadly, we didn't get at the time, except from the very few who I will never forget. I hope he will get results from the police investigation that, in our case, have still not surfaced ten years on.

This kind of incident is becoming more and more frequent. Carrying a pointed instrument should carry a minimum 10 year sentence . This is after all attempted murder. The laws on our island are out of date and do not cater for todays way of life. I am not blaming anybody in particular but talking from experience there are a lot of people whose culture and way of life is that of dog eat dog and they have carried weapons of some sort or another all their life. Malta is now fast becoming multi cultural and we are inheriting some of the bad customs of third world countries. While carrying a pointed weapon or for that matter any sort of weapon might be accepted for self defense elsewhere, we must make sure and send out a message to all that this is not acceptable in Malta. Our police and other law enforcement officers must have wider powers to stop and search. Forget about civil liberties rubbish, if one has nothing to hide they should welcome being searched. This is the only way forward before anarchy takes over. I reiterate what I said about not blaming anybody in particular.
