After its celebrated world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, the new VW Polo is now available on the local market.

No other car in its class has such a mature and high-end image as the new Polo, now in its fifth generation. Comfort, quality and safety have all taken a considerable leap forward. Among other things, the Polo was designed to attain the recently established, stricter and more comprehensive, five-star Euro NCAP rating. In the footwell area alone, intrusion – related to the car body’s resistance to deformation in a frontal crash – was lowered by 50 per cent. In the case of a side impact, the intrusion value was reduced by 20 per cent.

The new Polo will feature enhanced standard specifications over the previous model. These include power steering, climatic air conditioning, remote central locking, front electric windows, electric heated mirrors, driver and passenger front and front side airbags, radio CD MP3 with four front speakers, ABS, 15-inch alloy wheels, three-spoke leather steering wheel, leather gear lever and handbrake lever, on-board computer, flat tyre indicator, front centre armrest and front fog lights.

Despite significant improvements in all aspects of the car, the Polo’s body weight has been reduced by 7.5 per cent. Introduction of new TDI and TSI engines, and the seven-speed dual clutch transmission, has resulted in considerable improvement in fuel economy and reduced emissions over a wide range of engine power outputs.

Seven different engines will be offered on the new Polo in its first year – four petrol and three diesel – spanning a power range from 55 kW/ 70 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS. Five of these engines are entirely new or are being used for the first time in the Polo.

VW is represented in Malta by Continental Cars of Ta’ Xbiex.
