The Labour Party said this afternoon that the way how the Prime Minister tried to defend the fact that the finance minister had gone on a private visit abroad with leading entrepreneurs who have an interest in the gaming sector had not assured the people that there was no conflict of interest.

It said that the fact that the Prime Minister said he knew of the visit beforehand showed that Dr Gonzi either did not appreciate the seriousness of the situation or, worse, he had given his go-ahead for questionable behaviour by a leading minister of his cabinet.

The PL said it was the duty of the prime minister to give more details.

Dr Gonzi said this morning that he had been informed beforehand that Mr Fenech was going to London to watch an Arsenal football match with Joe Gasan, using an aircraft belonging to another entrepreneur, George Fenech.
