Eurosong rules ‘discriminate’ against non-Maltese
Music manager Grace Borg yesterday filed a judicial protest over a clause in the rules of the forthcoming Malta Eurosong contest restricting the nationality of participants.
She filed the protest as manager and on behalf of the Association of Singers, Musicians and Composers against Public Broadcasting Services and the Minister of Education and Culture.
Ms Borg protested that the rules laid down that: “Artistes, composers and authors must be of Maltese nationality or holding dual citizenship, one of which is Maltese“.
She argued that such limitation was unfair, arbitrary, detrimental and discriminatory because it was based on Maltese nationality and excluded others who may not hold such nationality.Ms Borg pointed out that up to last year Malta observed a reciprocity clause whereby the Maltese song contest used to accept participation or submissions from other countries.
She called for the regulations to be amended and for the closing date of submissions to be extended.

The only good thing I can think of out of Malta participating in Eurovision is that only through this contest do some foreigners actually know that Malta exists! But not exactly where it is located, cos as some of you mentioned we are so by far not neighbours! I can also add that it will be the 5th year running where I wont be following this 'silly' contest. Good luck to malta anyway for your efforts!

Why are you so anti - foreigners ( especially anti - British ), do you not realise that it is the 21st century, and Malta WILL become a multicultural society Country, whether you like it or not ! Then you will find that the British Colonial times were not so bad after all.

Those who hold the view that Malta should not remain an ESC contributor need to be careful here not to contradict themselves. The reason why we want the PBS, along with sponsors, to support Maltese nationals is the same very reason why we should encourage Malta to remain within the ESC community. Malta's participation provides the opportunity for a Maltese artist to travel abroad and gain exposure. Whatever placing Malta ends up copping is only of secondary importance. The focus here should be the Maltese artist. I do not think it is too much to pay, so long as they can have a go at it, especially with a little bit of help from sponsors.

I have nothing against foreigners taking part in next years entry but it doesn't really make sense to be honest. :/
In my opinion...we shouldn’t even compete in the Eurovision anymore. It's a waste of time, effort and money that could be used somewhere else. Its not even a competition of talent anymore; it should just be re-named ''which is the best south-eastern European country?''

u ajma! we are maltese, and want maltese people to represent our country. Just because some of our artists represented another country, is their thing & conscience, and if the other country accepted them, good luck to them. But we should have a Maltese astist to represent us!

Tell it to the marines Grace. We want MALTESE CITIZENS to represent us not foreigners That is, if we continue to to take part in this sham politically motivated voting festival where neighbours scratch each others back.

nowadays everyone is using the 'discrimination' racism trick to get what they want.

There is probably nothing wrong, at least in principle, with a non-Maltese representing Malta. But the PBS, along with sponsors, should have full jurisdiction, in my view. It is, nevertheless, the view of Maltese artists themselves that must be taken into account. Malta is rich in talent, and for this reason I would very much prefer a Maltese national to represent Malta. It's the selection process itself, in terms of quality and suitability of the entry for the particular year, that needs to be seriously questioned.
