A lawyer and former general election candidate, Edward Zammit Lewis, has confirmed an interest in standing for the election of general secretary of the Labour Party in January.

"I have expressed an interest and discussed the matter with Joseph Muscat," Dr Zammit Lewis, 36, told timesofmalta.com.

He said his interest stemmed form the fact that the role of the general secretary was being changed in view of the appointment of a party CEO. The general secretary's role will be political while the CEO handles the administration of the party.

"I am interested in the political role. I am not interested in remuneration from the party, but I would like to keep my legal practice," Dr Zammit Lewis said.

He said he would take a final decision depending on how matters evolved, but said he would like to play a key role in the changes being brought in by Dr Muscat in the way politics were conducted.

Dr Zammit Lewis is a a former president of Forum Zaghzagh Laburisti and has served as legal adviser to the Labour Party, mostly recently during the passage of the rent reform bill through Parliament.

He has also presented programmes on the party radio.

Dr Zammit Lewis was also briefly a councillor at Attard.

He is the first person to confirm an interest in running for the post vacated by the recent resignation of Jason Micallef. Party president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi is temporarily filling the post.
