Distributing condoms as part of a marketing exercise is not a responsible attitude towards proper sexual education, according to the Theology Students Association, the University Students’ Catholic Movement and the University chaplaincy.

They were reacting to Vodafone’s marketing campaign on campus. The mobile company distributed condoms to promote its new student packages, cheekily referred to as play packs.

The two students’ organisations and the chaplaincy referred to the Sexual Health Policy by the Commission for Social Policy within the University Students’ Council (KSU), which is based on “values of rights, respect and responsibility”, saying that a marketing gimmick such as the Vodafone one was certainly not responsible.

“The maturity of every student should be respected. Sexuality and the person of every student is not something one can play around with,” they said.

They expressed appreciation for the “wonderful spirit” present throughout Freshers’ Week, praising the new initiative of the debate area.
