It seems every once in a while something serves to spark off a debate about one of those ethically delicate subjects which divides opinions into black and white. Lately much has been said about the morning-after pill and whether or not such should be accepted in Malta or not.

The morning-after pill is indeed a deception; it is a cover-up for a much darker reality. On the face of it one may think that it is merely a pill which can be taken before or after sexual intercourse thus rendering it a merely preventive pill. It is in reality much different.

For those of us who believe in life and who believe in the value of life, this starts at conception thus that mere preventive pill the morning after is in reality a weapon to destroy the life which would have begun at conception. The whole point and purpose of the morning-after pill is to correct the "mistake" of having created life. One may thus argue it whatever way one wants but the morning-after pill is merely another form of abortion and to agree with the morning-after pill is to agree with the introduction of a form of abortion.

It is even more preposterous to argue that the morning-after pill should be given in the case of rape as some have attempted to argue. First and foremost the innocent life should not bare the burden of guilt of the culprit.

Secondly, the morning-after pill must be taken within at most five days; surely not enough time for the victim to gain composure and take such a serious and delicate decision.

It is sad that some have tried to re-brand the whole argument into a so-called battle of conservatives against liberals for it is anything but a battle between the so-called conservatives and liberals. This is in reality a defence; the defence of the right to life for everyone including the unborn child. This is a matter of principles and values; this is about the value of life.
