Rescuers in tough earthquake exercise

Maltese volunteers were today heavily engaged in an earthquake rescue simulation in a four-nation exercise being held in the ruins of a village near Wessel, Germany.

Their main task was to enter a collapsed tunnel to rescue an unknown number of persons trapped inside. The operation was dangerous and tricky, requiring careful planning and the removal of heavy debris. A large concrete slab had to be broken down in a confined space.

Members of the Maltese team were also called to assist in a rope access rescue situation from a high rise building to evacuate more trapped people.

The Maltese rescuers were also trained in dealing with the victims of the earthquake and their waiting relatives - played by actors.

The exercise continues overnight and tomorrow (Saturday).

The volunteers form part of the Spider team of the Civil Protection Department.

Rescuers from Germany, Holland and the UK are also taking part.

Video above shows scenes from the exercise and an explanation of the operation.
